SSB Interview Selection Procedures

STAGE-I Testing

  3. Personal Interview

STAGE-I Testing

1. SCREENING

Screening is the preliminary stage for filtering out the potential candidates from all the candidates who have applied for the SSB. In screening, the selection is done on the basis of following two tests.

a. Verbal and Non-Verbal Test
b. Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)

STAGE-II Testing

2. PSYCHOLOGY (Mansa)

After the list of candidates who have cleared the Stage I is out, the second stage begins. This stage involves Psychology four tests to check the psychological suitability of the candidate as an officer.

The Psychology tests, as stated earlier, comprises for four main sections:

i. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
ii. Word Association Test (WAT)
iii. Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
iv. Self Description Test (SD)

3. GTO (VAACHA):

After the restless exercise of Psychological testing in Stage-II, the candidates are given series of outdoor tasks. Group Testing Officer (GTO) conducts this stage of selection process.
There are a total of nine tasks on basis of which the candidates are to be selected.

i. Group Discussion (GD
ii. GPE or MPE (group/military planning exercise)
ii. Progressive group task (PGT)
iv. Snake Race/Group Obstacle Race
v. Individual Lecturette (IO)
vi. Half Group Task (HGT)
vii. Individual Obstacles
viii. Command task:
ix. Final Group Task (FGT)

4. Personal Interview (Karmana):

  • After a long voyage of the selection process comprising of various tasks and activities, the candidates move on to a stage of paramount significance.
  • The Personal Interview (PI) can be entitled as a purposeful conversation between the candidate and the Interviewing officers for about 50 to 60 minutes. The primary purpose of the whole PI process is to particularly check for Officer like Qualities (OLQs) in the candidate appearing for the SSB examination.

5. SSB Interview Conference at Zentex Academy

The conference in the SSB interview takes place on the final day of testing. It is a crucial phase where all assessors, including the president and deputy president, deliberate on each candidate’s performance. The Interviewing Officer (IO), Psychologist, and Group Testing Officer (GTO) come together to decide whether a candidate should be recommended or not.

The duration of this discussion varies—short conferences indicate a clear decision, whereas longer ones often involve candidates who are on the borderline. Candidates are called in one by one and asked simple questions about their performance, stay, and any feedback they may have. However, in some cases, they may face tricky or unexpected questions.
